Accutane is an oral form of vitamin A. You can be prescribed this medicine in case of having severe nodular acne that cannot be treated with any other methods. Every female of child-bearing potential must sign a special agreement, therefore becoming an iPLEDGE member. Starting one month before, during the treatment and 1 month after the last dosage of Accutane, the patients who signed this agreement are supposed to use a reliable combination of different birth control methods in order to avoid getting pregnant, since this drug can cause life-threatening defects in unborn babies.
Some medical conditions may require a dose adjustment or can be contraindications, including asthma, liver disease, a history of mental illness or depression (personal or running in the family), high cholesterol levels, heart disease, diabetes, bone disorders or eating disorders. You should also inform your doctor of any medicines you are currently taking to prevent drug interference. Some of the drugs that have been reported to interfere with Accutane include steroids, seizure medication, and tetracycline antibiotics (demeclocycline, doxycycline, minocycline).
